Very sad and disappointing news for our community!

As you know, in December 2009, we have filed a lawsuit against our former Project Manager Herko Coomans for return of funds (around €15,000) that belong to XOOPS community and are currently held by "Stichting XOOPS"

We've been just informed by our lawyers in Netherlands that unfortunately the Dutch Court dismissed our claims. The verdict is clearly disappointing to us and we strongly believe that the District Court of Zwolle-Lelystad erred in its conclusion, and we are investigating a possible appeal.

For example, it is beyond our comprehension that the court could state that purchasing by Herko the domain www.xoops.com on behalf of XOOPS (as confirmed by others) for $18.95 and selling it back to Stichting XOOPS for €4,000, while being approved by the same man who sells it (which is Herko Coomans himself), doesn't consitute a "personal enrichment", or as we would call it in the US: embezzlement. At a current exchange rate that's $5,330 profit for Herko, which he approved for himself out of XOOPS money!!! If you're puzzled by such a verdict, so are we!

This case will be definitely a warning to other Open Source projects to avoid the Dutch "Stichting" legal form, and about the Dutch court system that obviously doesn't understand the Open Source project idea.

You can see the verdict in Dutch here

While we are investigating a possible appeal, the important thing for us as a community is to continue with our work and keep moving forward. Our XOOPS journey continues!

We appreciate all of your support in this legal matter and our most sincere "Thanks" goes to all the 225 people who signed the petition!

Below is the English translation done by Ghia. If there are any corrections needed, please let us know, and we'll improve it.

And after the archive has been downloaded to your server it automatically unzips it and redirects you to the XOOPS install/upgrade wizard.

What do I need to run tinyXOOPS?
PHP 5.2+ (Lower version may work, but not tested)
- zlib must be installed
- allow_url_fopen must be "On"
- safemode must be off*

And the normal XOOPS requirements

*If you can change the max_execution_time to 0 (unlimited) yourself you don't have to disable safe mode. And if you can change it yourself I advise you to turn it on again after installation.

How do I use tinyXOOPS
1. Download the tinyXOOPS archive from [HERE].
2. Go to your webserver and make the directory where you want to install XOOPS writable. (Windows: Uncheck "read-only" in the directory properties. LINUX: CHMOD 777)
3. Upload the files in the downloaded archive to the directory you just made writable.
4. Open your browser and go to: http://yourdomain.com/yourdir/tinyXOOPS.php
5. Click on INSTALL if you want to perform a clean install and click UPGRADE if you want to perform a upgrade of your existing intallation.
- Downloading and unpacking may take some time, so don't worry if it takes long to load.
6. After the XOOPS files are downloaded and upacked you'll be redirected to the XOOPS install/upgrade wizard, complete this. (Check the XOOPS documentation for help with this)

- After the upgrade/install wizard is finished make sure the XOOPS installation dir isn't writeable anymore. (Windows: Check "read-only" in the directory properties. LINUX: CHMOD 755). And that you remove tinyXOOPS.php and pclzip.lib.php from your server.

What can I expect in future versions of tinyXOOPS
- A nicer layout
- Smaller files
- A (better) solution for the script execution time problem. (if i can find one...)
- And some other things I forgot to mention.

And please remember this is a test version!

Currently with XOOPS an application called protector is distributed with the core distribution of XOOPS.

Protector is a ingenious system to prevent DOS and other forms of malware clientele that attack systems. When protector detects an attack it moves the IP after aggression levels to a Banned List.

Currently this is only in IPv4 and does not include Proxy details which will need to be upgraded in Protector at some point for full support of Xortify and also to allow a better ban system as with php and the $_SERVER you can also capture peoples IP from behind a proxy. Xortify with XOOPS anyway was working from it latest release of 1.16 (download) will anytime someone is banned in a local installation of XOOPS, move the IP into the xorty cloud and register the details as a banned person at the cluster service at http://www.xortify.com/ via SOAP Protocol.

Xortify on any client should also poll via SOAP protocol xortify.com for the Banned IP list and prevent access to the site it is installed on for farmed attacks and other system. We use X-SOAP for the SOAP API as it is stable in the 4.25 and later series, this means you can have xortify functioning in anything that uses SOAP including Delphi application, .NET application, mainframe and is a valid list of aggressive banned IP in the xortify cloud.

Referring to the website as seen here – this is the latest banned people currently when this blog was written there is 2 test entries and 2 actual bans with the details filled by the xortify XOOPS client.

Xortify allows for XOOPS to communicate with other XOOPS Systems and obtain there Banned IP ranges from them, this is then available on your site as a known aggressive person, this ensures you are defended against these aggressive individuals.

<img src='http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash1/hs454.ash1/25001_382770347126_696567126_4228445_2872266_n.jpg' class='right' border='0' alt='' onload="JavaScript:if(this.width>300) this.width=300" />

Of course to make it work in other CMS, you will have to write and application interface for that CMS or Software. With protector with XOOPS where not all systems have a system of protection for the internet environment and aggressive users but with XOOPS a Xortify cloud is possible due to protector and I believe Xortify should be included with distribution.

The more people use xortify the greater the cloud of security is, currently there is a small application of it, but the sky is the limit. Xortify was written by Simon Roberts (Seen above). It uses w3c standards of communication including WSDL, you can see the XOOPS wiki for more details on X-SOAP and the Xortify functions & installation.
